The app is free. Model access is separate: a subscription, an API key, or a model server.

On October 6, 2026, Mecum launched a free, open-source macOS app for agents that work inside desktop software. You can give a worker a task in Mecum, or connect Claude Code or Codex through a local MCP bridge. The configuration for that bridge is generated by the app.

The launch post describes a background driver that moves app windows onto a virtual display and routes the agent's input there, so your cursor stays available. Some apps still grab focus when they launch or open a dialog. Mecum tries to restore your window and can pause a run if recovery fails. Stopping a run does not undo actions that already completed.

Perception turns the current window into structured text on the Mac, reading pixels and adding accessibility information when it exists. The post says a remote model can receive window text, task context, and relevant app knowledge. Other tools can return screenshots, so what leaves the machine depends on the tools and the connection you choose.

Mecum is Apache-2.0, including the app, the engine, and the background driver. The desktop window-to-text pipeline runs locally. Model access is not included: the post says your connection may use a subscription, an API key, or a model server.

This is the first filing on the Mecum hub. Webcmd is the closer browser-side alternative, not a Mac desktop driver.

Questions

What is Mecum?

Mecum is a free, open-source macOS app announced on October 6, 2026. It lets an agent work in desktop apps while you keep using the Mac, by moving the agent's windows to a virtual display.

What are Mecum alternatives?

Webcmd is browser infrastructure, not a Mac desktop driver. OpenCode is a coding agent in the terminal. Neither one replaces Mecum's virtual-display driver.

Does Mecum include a model?

No. The launch post says model access may be a subscription, an API key, or a model server. Claude Code and Codex can connect through the local MCP bridge.
