On October 6, 2026, Microsoft introduced WinDbg MCP, a natural-language interface for the WinDbg debugger. It uses Model Context Protocol so an AI client can work against an active WinDbg session while staying tied to debugger evidence. Safeguards are on by default, and you can see actions the client initiates.

Microsoft says the client can inspect the current target, run debugger commands, review diagnostics and source, visualize debugger data, or create scripts. The officially supported clients at launch are Visual Studio Code with GitHub Copilot, and GitHub Copilot CLI. Other MCP clients, including Codex, may work with custom configuration on a best-effort basis and are not officially supported. Some of those clients do not support MCP sampling, which can mean turning off cross-prompt injection protection.

WinDbg MCP ships in WinDbg starting with version 1.2610.1001.0, from the Microsoft Store and the WinDbg download page. It is not a separate priced product in the announcement.
